A VERY OLD HOUSE
This is a story of how we, a family of not-so-rich people, bought a very old house (because that was all we could afford) and transformed it into a beautiful and cosy home in just five months...
in a very affordable way. We planned to convert this building into a home based loosely on the British colonial style of interior design. Since the owner of this house is a keen student of Christian Theology, this housing project presented an opportunity to venture into an exploration of the theological importance of architecture and space in our experience of God. The outcome of this house, therefore, represents a sustained theological conversation with space, undertaken with a sense of poetic reverence. Location: Johor Bahru, West Malaysia |

BUT COST DID!There was no professional interior designer working with us, as we wanted to put all the little money we had into creating something that was birthed from our own imagination.
So instead of hiring an interior designer, we made the effort to, basically, imagine. The house we initially bought was an old, almost dilapidated, badly preserved linked house built on a piece of land measuring a mere 22 feet x 70 feet. The house was built in 1991. So when we bought it in January 2017, it was an aged 25 year-old house. |
This effort has birthed the new home
that we now call "The New Arundel"
"Arundel" is an old English word that means "eagle valley".
The eagle is an animal that is utterly significant to the main owner of this home because of his life story and also because in his Christian faith the eagle is an important symbol of the divinity of Jesus Christ. For those of you who are interested to explore how we have developed the house from its original state into its current and final state, we invite you to view our pictures and their accompanying commentaries on this website. |
